Microbiologist – Northern Scientific Inc.

This is a permanent position working full time hours in our analytical lab in Langley, BC.

Are you a seasoned microbiologist with a passion for quality assurance and research? Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to join a new fast-paced industry?

Northern Scientific is located in Langley, British Columbia, and is a late stage applicant looking to attain an Analytical Testing license under the Canadian Cannabis Act.

The Northern Scientific Analytical Lab will offer the full suite of testing services required by Health Canada for pesticide residues, cannabinoid and terpene potency, heavy metal content, residual solvents, and microbiological contaminants, among others. As well as providing consultation and process development for various stakeholders in the cannabis industry. Northern Scientific is focused exclusively on cannabis, with the aim of applying modern science to the preferred techniques of the cannabis cultivation and processing sectors, for the purpose of elevating our clients to a new industry standard. Having a strong scientific foundation enables us to identify the plant’s potential with the goal of maximizing efficiencies, develop new value-add products, while ensuring quality and safety.

Job Summary

Quality assurance testing is the foundation of Canada’s regulated cannabis industry, and this role is critical for the delivery of those services to Northern Scientific’s clients. The Microbiologist will be responsible for the method development to characterize and process cannabis-based materials. As well as the on going development, optimization and validation of existing and new methods.

This position is for a motivated and experienced individual with a strong desire to work in a fast-paced, high throughput, collaborative start-up environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and analyze samples for yeast, mould, E. coli, Salmonella, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa
  • Perform culture based analysis of samples for yeast, mould, E. coli, Salmonella, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa.
  • Optimization of RT-PCR assays for ideal threshold cycling (CT), efficiency, precision, and sensitivity
  • Interpretation of RT-PCR data
  • Perform analysis of reference materials and other quality control samples as needed
  • Record data in accordance with Northern Scientific’s policies
  • Use and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment (biological safety cabinet, autoclave, balance, qPCR instruments, incubators, etc. )
  • Ability to practice aseptic techniques and to maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Use and maintenance of basic lab equipment: balance, homogenizer, centrifuge, pipettes, syringes, etc.
  • Adhere to Northern Scientific’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols
  • Ensure laboratory is stocked with necessary supplies
  • Other administrative/laboratory tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

  • M.Sc., and a minimum 2 years experience working in a in microbiology or molecular biology laboratory setting.
  • Previous experience working specifically with PCR with respect to troubleshooting, optimization of protocols and data
  • Strong knowledge and experience of qPCR, bacteria & mould culturing
  • Basic computer skills – MS Office, LIMS
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Detail-oriented with record keeping skills
  • Able to work evenings and weekends when required
  • Quick learner with good time-management, communication, multi-tasking and priority setting skills
  • Positive outlook with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time
  • Willing to work overtime during peak season
  • Some lifting and carrying (up to 10kgs)
