About the Role

The OCS is currently recruiting for a Data Engineer to join our growing team. As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible to optimize our data/data pipeline architecture of our integrated systems to power, advanced analysis, analytical reports and dashboards for our internal clients.

This is an exciting opportunity to use your 3+ years of experience with data engineering to provide guidance and insights into data initiatives/requests, based upon your knowledge of industry best practices and methodology to provide robust solutions.

About Your Day

• Build and maintain batch and real-time data pipelines

• Solution complex data engineering problems to directly support and deliver for strategic data initiatives

• Ensure data delivery architecture is consistent throughout ongoing projects.

• Improve and automate, where possible, the data pipelines for workforce data analytics, and integrations between various systems

• Translate data requirements into detailed designs and pipeline architecture, ensuring proper documentation of methodology.

• Contribute effectively with innovative solutions and define best practices around data extraction, modeling, consumption, and governance

About You

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Software Engineering/Information Technology or a related field of study, or equivalent level of education and experience

• 3+ years of experience with data analytics, developing and maintaining data warehouses to feed advanced analytics and deploying analytical models within an organization.

• Good hands-on experience developing cloud-based solutions with Microsoft Azure.

• Advanced skill with Excel, SQL and one of the scripting languages (Python or R)

• Knowledge of one of the standard reporting tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker etc.) would be an asset

• Experience working in an Agile environment would be an asset

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Remote Work

• This position offers a Hybrid work schedule. When the office reopens, you will be required to be in the office 1-2 days each week, with the ability to work from home for the remaining workdays (subject to specific business needs requiring office attendance).

• Currently, our office is closed

• When working from home, a reliable internet connection is required.

• Remote work is supported with cloud-based applications and collaboration tools (i.e., MS Teams)

This is a fixed term 3-year appointment with renewal dependent on performance and availability of funds. For their extension responsibilities, the successful applicant is expected to provide service to the PPEM Plant Disease Clinic by developing a nematode diagnostic program and providing nematode identifications from regional samples including from the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions using phenotypic and molecular tools.</p><p></p><p>The candidate may develop and provide molecular or other premium diagnostic services for other diseases of value to the PPEM Plant Disease Clinic. The candidate will develop an externally funded, research program on emerging nematode invasions providing new tools for diagnosis and identification, and sustainable management in the context of global climate change. Research will use a translational taxonomic approach for management that includes the classification and development of nomenclatural proposals for undescribed species and genotypes using phenotypic methods and using and developing molecular methods as a basis for designing management strategies that may include biological control, suppression with cover or trap crops, natural products, and other sustainable practices. Other taxonomic products including keys for the identification of emerging nematode pests are expected.</p><p></p><p>The successful applicant is expected to collaborate with other faculty in one or more key areas including Plant Disease Epidemiology, Biological Control, and International Agriculture and to maintain collaborations with USDA APHIS and the USDA Nematode Collection. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university is required. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Penn State’s Institute for Sustainable Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Science (SAFES) and its emerging Integrated Agricultural Diagnostic Community of Practice and the College of Agricultural Sciences emerging Digital Agriculture Initiative. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact with internationally renowned Penn State programs that include Institute for Energy and the Environment and the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics.
