Job Position located in Southeastern, Michigan.

Scientific Director - Cannabis Lab

Job Summary: This unique opportunity is located at an established state-licensed and ISO 17025 accredited laboratory testing facility serving the Michigan medical and adult-use marijuana market. We provide analytical testing services to licensed producers of cannabis flower and cannabis products within the state. Our test methods are used to determine potency and screen for chemical and biological contaminants. Our team is looking for a Scientific Director to oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory. The Scientific Director is responsible for: i) leading method development and validation efforts in collaboration with a team of capable scientists, ii) directing development and implementation of laboratory policies and procedures, iii) ensuring compliance with internal policies, state regulations, and ISO 17025, and iv) education and management of the laboratory technical staff.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Science and science-based colleagues to optimize analytical methodology for superior performance in terms of data quality, efficiency and reliability.
  • Operate effectively in a fast-paced, team-focused laboratory environment with high sample volume and guaranteed turn-around times.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert for testing performed by the laboratory.
  • Maintain training programs that ensure the technical competency and continuous professional development of laboratory personnel.
  • Coordinate directly with the Quality Assurance Director to maintain an effective quality management system that ensures all aspects of routine testing operations are maintained in control and in compliance with applicable quality standards, including ISO 17025.
  • Serve in a leadership and managerial role to all laboratory staff with a leadership style that encourages professional growth, collaboration, dedication to exceptional science and outstanding customer service.
  • Coordinate with dedicated computer programmers to guide continuous improvement and optimization of the company’s custom-built LIMS system.
  • Attend periodic management meetings to provide the management team with updates on the status of laboratory operations and scientific development projects.
  • Direct the maintenance and troubleshooting activities as required to resolve problems and keep instruments and equipment in good working order.
  • Review, edit, and approve laboratory procedures, policies, method validations, QA/QC procedures and records to ensure compliance with requirements of regulatory agencies and/or accrediting bodies.
  • Review, validate and approve analytical data produced by the analytical staff according to established methods and quality control criteria.
  • Promptly respond to customer, regulator, or other third-party questions about test results and interpretation of laboratory data.
  • Attend regional and national meetings and conferences related to analytical testing of cannabis and other relevant professional subject matter.
  • Authorized signatory on final testing results reported to state regulators and clients.

Applicant Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to develop and validate analytical methodology to meet stringent quality and regulatory standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; ability to work with colleagues and multiple clients in a professional and organized manner.
  • In-depth understanding of quality management systems to ensure data quality and integrity in a regulated laboratory environment.
  • Proficient in the operation and troubleshooting techniques of various types of advanced instrumentation such as LC-MS/MS, HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS and qPCR.
  • Proficient with electronic applications including MS Word, MS Excel, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a graduate degree. A master’s degree in the chemical, environmental, or biological sciences from an accredited college or university and at least four (4) years of post-degree laboratory experience OR Doctorate (PhD) degree and at least two (2) years of post-degree laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various analytical chemistry instrumentation, techniques, procedures, and QA/QC criteria used in regulated analytical laboratory environments.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to communicate clearly with staff, management, and clients.
  • Able to sit and /or stand as needed for up to 100% of an 8-hour day.
  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate computer and other equipment.

Key initiatives include the Health Leadership Academy; MGD Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research; MGD Health Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship; MGD Centre for Biomedical Engineering; MGD Centre for Transfusion Research; and MGD Centre for Chronic Lung Disease; with more in development.</p><p><b>Job Summary</b></p><p>The Director of Strategy and Operations will drive strategic planning, facilitate execution, and will be responsible for the overall management and administration of the financial, human resources and physical resources.</p><p>The incumbent will provide strategic and operational leadership to MGDII visioning, will drive planning in both academic and research activities and act as a key resource to faculty members providing support to faculty-wide initiatives and partnerships with teaching hospitals, departments, schools and universities (both domestically and internationally).</p><p>The director is responsible for the strategic orientation of innovation management and will set up a framework that both encourages innovation and supports its success.</p><p>In carrying out their responsibilities the director will collaborate with the senior administrative staff of the Faculty of Health Sciences, will negotiate and manage inter-institutional relationships along with future initiatives and philanthropic gifts to further enhance innovation in healthcare.</p><p><b>Key Responsibilities:</b></p><ul><li>Primary responsibility for managing the infrastructure supporting the educational activities within MGDII.</li><li>Manage programs and relationships that cross institutional boundaries as a result of a partnership agreements including teaching hospitals (St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital</li><li>Primary responsibility for negotiating, implementing and monitoring shared responsibilities for recruitment, space and other infrastructure between McMaster and partnered hospitals</li><li>Lead and/or participate in special projects with any number of institutions/organizations (Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University, MILO, Teaching hospitals (ex.
