The Legal Counsel will provide broad support to Tilray’s leading cannabis, hemp, and alcohol business. You will be working alongside and in support of our highly experienced corporate and operational teams and legal professionals throughout the globe. Role and Responsibilities
  • Supporting the growth of the business across all categories which includes:
  • Identifying and managing key legal/regulatory risks and opportunities in the marketing, distribution, import/export, and registration of medical and adult-use cannabis products, hemp products, and alcohol products
  • Supporting the execution of commercial transactions and partnerships, weighing multiple legal and non-legal risks and inputs
  • Working closely with business units to ensure that all commercial activities are conducted in a strategic and compliant manner
  • Staying current on regulatory framework to be able to counsel the business appropriately
  • Providing guidance on regulatory interpretation and training on topics of interest and related to compliance
  • Providing guidance and review and approval of marketing, packaging, advertising, and product claims, and support the development of new and innovative product offerings
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of commercial contracts and providing legal counsel on a variety of commercial matters
  • Dealing with complex, significant matters that cut across legal and related areas weighing multiple stakeholder inputs
  • Assist with privacy compliance and assessment
  • Serving as an in-house generalist and attending to a wide variety of legal and quasi-legal matters on an as-needed basis
  • Undertake special projects as required to support new business initiatives.
  • Working with broader legal team to ensure efficient and effective delivery of legal services in-house, including by:
    • Maintaining commercial templates to ensure best practices on terms and conditions and intake systems, and training the business on their use
    • Implementing technology solutions to streamline legal administrative tasks
    • Collaborating with and providing support to other members of the legal team
    • Managing outside counsel in cost-effective manner, including for litigation discovery matters
    • Supporting the continuous improvement of legal processes to promote efficiency
  • Contribute positively to the culture of the legal team and the company as a whole, including by providing training to business units
  • Due to the dynamic nature of the industry, the scope of your job may evolve and change by business demands and regulatory/ legal framework
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Law degree from a recognized Canadian institution
  • Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • 3-5 years of experience practicing law in a top tier law firm and/or in-house legal department. In house experience is preferred
  • Experience working in a highly-regulated environment such as life sciences, alcohol, food and beverage, and tobacco or working in the consumer packaged goods industry is strongly preferred
  • Proven negotiation and drafting skills for various types of complex commercial contracts
  • Prior experience providing counsel and advice directly to business clients
  • Ability to work independently, self-starter and entrepreneurial
  • Must be relationship-oriented with excellent business judgment, strategic thinking, and project management skills, and prepared to work in a cross-functional, fast-paced team environment
  • Must be responsive and be able to provide practical customer service to multiple departments
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to brief and communicate complex issues in a succinct, casual, and approachable manner to business units

As the Hemp Farming Program Coordinator, your responsibilities will include:<br /><ul><li>Coordinating the regulatory responsibilities and elements of the SC Hemp Farming Program (SCHFP).</li><li>Maintaining detailed infrastructure data compilation to include farm locations, sampling schedules and assignments, compliance records, training, GPS coordinates, processor inventories, farmer inventories, call logs, information request, etc.</li><li>Ensuring compliance with the USDA though reporting, audit preparation and following USDA requirements, deadlines and milestones.</li><li>Supervising and providing training to SCHFP administrative staff and inspectors.</li><li>Supervising and assigning regulatory inspections of Hemp as pursuant to the SC Hemp Farming Act and the SC State Plan.</li><li>Supervising inspectors with collecting samples, conducting pre and post-harvest inspections, along with verification audits.</li><li>Maintaining compliance with a FBI database and record keeping system.</li><li>Managing the application process to include compliance and communication with interested parties.</li><li>Creating and distributing a SCHFP newsletter six times per year (every other month).</li><li>Participating in state, national and federal Hemp calls, webinars and seminars.</li><li>Working with SCDA's General Counsel to address legal questions, policies and procedures relating to the SCHFP, SC State Law and State Plan.</li><li>Maintaining and updating Standard Operating Procedures for the SCHFP.</li><li>Supervising the inspection of hemp processing facilities for compliance with the SC State Plan.</li><li>Coordinating seminars, workshops and regulatory education efforts in SC in collaboration with Clemson University Extension and other industry partners.</li><li>Planning and executing an annual SCHFP Resource Event.</li></ul> NOTE: This is NOT a remote position - Employee reports to the Consumer Protection Headquarters in West Columbia.</div><br /><ul><li>Bachelor's degree with at least 24 hours in an agricultural related field and three (3) years of professional level experience in an agriculture or agricultural inspection or enforcement field</li><li>The candidate selected for this position must successfully pass a SC state (SLED) and federal background check.</li><li>A valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.</li></ul><br /><div><ul><li>Able to communicate effectively with a wide audience of individuals, farmers, growers, handlers, processors, state and federal law enforcement, and other industry related groups.</li><li>Must be team oriented with the ability to lead and grow employees.</li><li>Excellent computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft programming (including Excel, Power Point).</li><li>Should be knowledgeable of laws, regulations (state and federal), policies and procedures regarding USDA Farm Act and SC State Plan.</li><li>Self-starter with excellent time management skills.</li><li>Must have the ability to climb, stoop and lift up to 25 lbs.
