DESCRIPTION

The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes the expansion of the student health and well-being center under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.

SHS provides oversight of primary urgent care, women’s health and specialty care for a student body of over 40,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students as well as supporting services including laboratory, pharmacy, imaging. SHS staff consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, Social workers, medical assistants, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistant, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS supports the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to continuous quality and safety improvement through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.

The Lead Technician/Optician performs specialized tasks in fitting, dispensing, and adjusting eyewear (frame, lenses, and coatings) while considering a patient's prescription, occupation, lifestyle, finances, habits, facial features, and preferences. Provide the ophthalmic lab with all optical spectacle work orders. Assist in overseeing optical practice which include fitting, ordering, and dispensing glasses and contact lenses. Schedule and meet with vendor representatives to purchase, monitor, and maintain an accounting of frames, contacts, glasses, and optical supplies. Verify spectacle orders are made to specifications and meet ANSI Z80 standards.

This position provides assistance in optometry procedures: taking patient history, visual acuity, color vision, stereopsis, auto refractive error measurements, intraocular ocular pressure measurements using non contact tonometer, spectacle and contact lens measurements, contact lens training in insertion and removal and related services. Act as the clinic lead: trains new technicians on patient care and oversees clinic patient flow. Provide work direction to support staff and assistants for optical dispensary and/or optometry practice. Assist with organization and stocking of exam rooms. Assist Optometry Supervisor in administrative services including activities in billing, coding, reconciliations, inventory, finance, human resources, procurement, purchasing and student health services. Resolve vendor accounts payable concerns. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal and material resources. Assist in general management activities including long-range and short-range strategic planning to help accomplish the Student Health and Well-being's mission.

MININUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area.

  • American Board of Opticianry certification and maintain license with the CA Board of Optometry.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform visual acuity, measurement of refractive error, color vision, stereo vision, intraocular pressure with non-contact tonometer, perimetry, and related tests.

  • Demonstrated ability to take patient history, evaluate patient problems and provide complete documentation in patient record.

  • Demonstrated ability to take measurements for ordering prescription glasses such as pupillary distance, optical center, segment heights, A, B, DBL, and ED measurements.

  • Demonstrated ability to measure spectacle lens power, and rigid gas permeable lens power, radius, and diameter.

  • Demonstrated ability to train and educate patients to insert, remove, and care for soft, rigid gas permeable, and hybrid contact lenses.

  • Demonstrated ability to train and educate patients, staff and general community regarding optometry clinical services and procedures and necessary patient instructions.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately, both verbally and in writing, including knowledge of proper business formats, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

  • General knowledge of opthalmic diseases, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment in order to carry out all functions.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of professional staff and patients with tact and diplomacy. Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in using electronic medical records and understanding of medical record management.

  • Experience in making referrals for medical care, including knowledge of community resources and health insurance authorization processes with full scope of third party payers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • National Contact Lens Examiner Certificate.
