Job Overview

The Director of Merchandising helps lead the Merchandising team working directly with the EVP, Commercial & Growth. The Director carries out the organization’s Merchandising strategy; develops & implements procedures, processes & best practices for our cannabis retail shops. This role is responsible for ensuring the best products, price & placement of retail cannabis, as well as promotional planning and delivering to our sales, margin and inventory targets.

Additionally, this position will support the growth of Category Managers & Buyers to develop the best-in-class assortment across all Brands and other merchandising-related tasks as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop & design department processes & strategy that support overall banner merchandising strategy, delivering both customer loyalty and sales growth.

• Coach, train & mentor Category Managers & Buyers to develop category plans, implement category strategies & manage vendor relationships

• Work with buying team to execute category plans that meet the needs of the banners within each geographic region

• Inspire product & program innovations from the buying teams & vendors

• Set margin targets by category, province and banner and ensure adherence to them, adjusting as required per changing market conditions and competition

• Build department/category tactics that support the department/banner strategy

• Establish category level wholesale & retail margin budgets that meet the targets of the regional banners

• Set performance targets for categories including sales, promotional mix, shrink, gross margin

• Manage promotional & category sales mixes to achieve banner targets by geographic region

• Translate strategic category plans into tactical merchandising activities

• Identify opportunities in line with consumer trends & banner strategies

• Ensure a high level of personal & team education on department strategies & tactics being executed

• Direct the execution of merchandising categories

• Ensure the Category Plans align to the banner promotional & pricing strategies

• Build vendor relationships to enable effective strategic planning

• Analyze category performance in the marketplace & at individual competitors

• Empower employees & develop top talent

• Foster an environment for skill development & career progression to develop talent

• Work collaboratively with cross-functional departments

Education, Training and Experience

• An Undergraduate Degree

• Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in retail

• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel

• Knowledge of cannabis & accessory products is an asset

• Clean Criminal Record

• Provincial Cannabis Certification
