About the Role


In this role, you must be well rounded and confident in your HR abilities, while also being comfortable liaising with a variety of stakeholders, including C-suite leaders, to understand business needs and outcomes. In this role, no task is too small or too big, the successful candidate must be willing and able to support with everything from administrative tasks to taking a lead on unfamiliar or complex initiatives.

Critical skills for this position include strong professional discretion, resourcefulness, and the ability to produce high quality work with limited oversight by demonstrating strong problem solving and risk mitigation strategies. Our company is no stranger to change, so it is essential the candidate is resilient, adaptable and has a positive go-getter attitude to match our fast-paced environment and evolving business needs. As this role is the only dedicated HR support residing in Ontario, the successful candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills to connect with our HR leaders and stakeholders in Alberta and be willing and able to travel to/from various Ontario retail locations regularly, when HR support is required in person.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Partner and connect with retail employees, managers, and senior leadership to manage day-to-day HR operations’ needs.
  • Providing coaching and recommendations to managers and senior leadership to help them work through employee relations matters throughout the full employee life cycle, including but not limited to, recruitment and talent strategy, onboarding support, coaching and training, performance management, leaves of absence support, total rewards inquiries needs (benefits, pay, vacation, etc.), facilitating difficult conversations and terminations, as well as offboarding.
  • Visiting various Nova Cannabis locations as needed, in order to learn the teams, business, and cannabis industry.
  • Representing the company professionally when visiting our retail locations, facilitating job fairs, or participating in other HR or industry events.
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement and creative ways to proactively support our retail teams so they can do their best work, as well as carrying out those ideas into actionable solutions.
  • Engaging stakeholders in the business to conduct needs analysis and research, and then interpreting those insights to identify the action items necessary for comprehensive project plans, associated project timelines, and suitable implementation strategies.
  • Engaging with stakeholders and the HR team on total rewards allocations and strategy for talent attraction/retention as it relates to the employee value proposition.
  • Pulling reports and compiling raw data into meaningful HR metrics as requested, also includes some manual tracking of data in order to produce these metrics.
  • Drafting and/or reviewing a variety of employment letters.
  • Drafting correspondence on behalf of the HR team, including letters, emails, memos, policies, procedures, process instructions, information summaries, proposals, etc. as needed.
  • Building and editing HR materials which may include templates, tools, and training resources in order to improve overall efficiency, effectiveness, and user experience.
  • Facilitating in person and/or virtual training as needed and rolling out new or amended programs/policies/processes.
  • Participating in peer review for HR team members as requested, to confirm accuracy, reduce risk, and broaden perspective.
  • Providing oral and written employment verifications for current and former employees, while ensuring that proper consent and disclosure practices are followed.
  • Reviewing and working with documentation from confidential personnel records and general document management in both hard copy and electronic formats.
  • Supporting HR with internal and external audits of employee data.
  • Completing HR/Payroll documentation updates on the company intranet, if requested.
  • May be responsible for daily management of the general HR email inbox and may be added to the monthly rotation for management of the general HR phone line, if requested.
  • Keeping up to date with current HR trends, best practice, and legislation changes in Ontario as well as a general understanding of legislative and regulatory differences across the provinces Nova Cannabis operates in.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications


  • Post-secondary degree with a focus in HR required.
  • Candidates who have obtained or are working towards their CHRP through the HRPA preferred.
  • Minimum 4-6 years’ experience in HR required.
  • Experience supporting a mid-sized company operating in multiple Canadian provinces is an asset.
  • Experience working in HR for a retail company is an asset.
  • Requires a strong understanding of employment legislation in Ontario and a basic understanding of the AGCO regulatory requirements in the liquor/cannabis industry.
  • Must be able to identify the implications of recommendations/decisions in our Ontario locations, as well as the company as a whole, in order to understand when further review/approval is required to keep leaders apprised and in order to follow our internal review standards for alignment and consistency nationally.
  • Must excel in accurately analyzing and synthesizing data into practical inferences, providing well-planned and comprehensive recommendations.
  • Must be highly accountable and able to develop and oversee project plans to move them forward.
  • Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite, have a good understanding of HRIS, training, and payroll systems.
  • Must be able to pass a basic criminal record check.
  • May be required to obtain CannSell certification.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to commute to/from work and ability to travel to various company locations (minimum 20% of the time).
