Job Position located in Southeastern, Michigan.

Scientific Director - Cannabis Lab

Job Summary: This unique opportunity is located at an established state-licensed and ISO 17025 accredited laboratory testing facility serving the Michigan medical and adult-use marijuana market. We provide analytical testing services to licensed producers of cannabis flower and cannabis products within the state. Our test methods are used to determine potency and screen for chemical and biological contaminants. Our team is looking for a Scientific Director to oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory. The Scientific Director is responsible for: i) leading method development and validation efforts in collaboration with a team of capable scientists, ii) directing development and implementation of laboratory policies and procedures, iii) ensuring compliance with internal policies, state regulations, and ISO 17025, and iv) education and management of the laboratory technical staff.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Science and science-based colleagues to optimize analytical methodology for superior performance in terms of data quality, efficiency and reliability.
  • Operate effectively in a fast-paced, team-focused laboratory environment with high sample volume and guaranteed turn-around times.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert for testing performed by the laboratory.
  • Maintain training programs that ensure the technical competency and continuous professional development of laboratory personnel.
  • Coordinate directly with the Quality Assurance Director to maintain an effective quality management system that ensures all aspects of routine testing operations are maintained in control and in compliance with applicable quality standards, including ISO 17025.
  • Serve in a leadership and managerial role to all laboratory staff with a leadership style that encourages professional growth, collaboration, dedication to exceptional science and outstanding customer service.
  • Coordinate with dedicated computer programmers to guide continuous improvement and optimization of the company’s custom-built LIMS system.
  • Attend periodic management meetings to provide the management team with updates on the status of laboratory operations and scientific development projects.
  • Direct the maintenance and troubleshooting activities as required to resolve problems and keep instruments and equipment in good working order.
  • Review, edit, and approve laboratory procedures, policies, method validations, QA/QC procedures and records to ensure compliance with requirements of regulatory agencies and/or accrediting bodies.
  • Review, validate and approve analytical data produced by the analytical staff according to established methods and quality control criteria.
  • Promptly respond to customer, regulator, or other third-party questions about test results and interpretation of laboratory data.
  • Attend regional and national meetings and conferences related to analytical testing of cannabis and other relevant professional subject matter.
  • Authorized signatory on final testing results reported to state regulators and clients.

Applicant Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to develop and validate analytical methodology to meet stringent quality and regulatory standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; ability to work with colleagues and multiple clients in a professional and organized manner.
  • In-depth understanding of quality management systems to ensure data quality and integrity in a regulated laboratory environment.
  • Proficient in the operation and troubleshooting techniques of various types of advanced instrumentation such as LC-MS/MS, HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS and qPCR.
  • Proficient with electronic applications including MS Word, MS Excel, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a graduate degree. A master’s degree in the chemical, environmental, or biological sciences from an accredited college or university and at least four (4) years of post-degree laboratory experience OR Doctorate (PhD) degree and at least two (2) years of post-degree laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various analytical chemistry instrumentation, techniques, procedures, and QA/QC criteria used in regulated analytical laboratory environments.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to communicate clearly with staff, management, and clients.
  • Able to sit and /or stand as needed for up to 100% of an 8-hour day.
  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate computer and other equipment.

Providing regular coaching, guidance, and interpretation of HR policies, procedures, laws, standards, regulations, and feedback to help manage the HR operations in their departments.</li></ul><ul><li>Support all areas of HR; including talent and performance management, succession planning, engagement, positive workplace environment, organizational development, change management, associate relations, employment law, and effective adoption of company initiatives and strategies.</li></ul><ul><li>Supports talent acquisition, building external talent pipeline, supporting talent development programs, and creating strategies for employer branding initiatives. Partners with department managers to understand organizational needs.</li></ul><ul><li>Maintain current knowledge of all HR compliance related laws and regulations to include legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees.</li></ul><ul><li>Maintain current knowledge of cannabis-specific licensing regulations as they relate to the HR function and teams across all business lines.</li></ul><ul><li>Provides day-to-day performance management guidance to line management (e.g., coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions).</li></ul><ul><li>Work with operational leaders to mitigate potential risk, by providing strong employee relations support and guidance.</li></ul><ul><li>Works closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention.</li></ul><ul><li>Partner/conduct investigations relating to harassment allegations, workplace complaints, or other employee concerns. Assist with performance review and talent management program.</li></ul><ul><li>Prepare or maintain employment records related to events such as hiring, termination, leaves, transfers, or promotions. In conjunction, maintain and update HR documents.</li></ul><ul><li>Identify cause for turnover in the field and assist with exit interviews and offboarding.</li></ul><p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p><ul><li>Bachelor’s degree in HR or 3+ years in HR in lieu of degree.
