Scientist, Cultivar Development

Aurora Cannabis Inc. Edmonton, AB Full-time
Apply Now Copy link

The Aurora Science team has been established to provide the science, technical innovations and services that will underpin the Aurora's global cannabis production.

The team includes experts in breeding and genetics, applied cultivation, and plant tissue culture.

Our research efforts provide Aurora with scientific data to support operational and commercial business decisions, and to enable Aurora to achieve more economical production, through higher yields with reduced inputs, minimize impacts of pests and disease, and to produce higher value cannabis products that align with patient needs and consumer preference.

The consumer experience is an increasingly important focal point in our efforts.

SCIENTIST, CULTIVAR DEVELOPMENT

As the legal cannabis industry matures, consumers are demanding increasing levels of quality in their cannabis products.

In order to ensure that Aurora's Sky facility will be able to deliver cannabis that meets and exceeds consumer expectations, the Science team will be continuously trialing, commercializing and optimizing the production of new cultivars bred internally by the Breeding and Genetics team.

In addition to this, the successful candidate will also manage data collection and experimentation during standard production cycles to provide data and recommendations for improvements to cultivation procedures.

The intent is to enable Sky to deliver consistent high-quality cannabis for Aurora's product portfolios sold under a range of brands.

We are seeking a skilled leader to manage these trials, in a manner that will achieve these goals as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The successful candidate will be provided a dedicated team and resources to achieve the goals laid out and will be accountable for all aspects of the trials, from environmental conditions of the greenhouse, propagation, cultivation and data collection, harvest and post-harvest processes.

This position will report to the Director, Cultivar Development and will work directly with the greater Science team and will also be required to work closely with many individuals and teams across Aurora, particular the Cultivation and Operations teams on site at Sky.

Stakeholder relationships are key to the success in this role; communication, relationship building and a fundamental understanding of the various functions within Aurora are all critical skills for this role.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Management of a cultivar trial pipeline that will enable data-driven decisions by the end of the project (e.g. rapidly cycle small scale trials, scaling plant numbers along the way)

Carry out regular trials on new bred cultivars; end-to-end responsibilities from cloning (or obtaining the required propagative material) to post-harvest processes

Lead and manage a team of two people, with potential for growth

Work closely with the General Manager, Lead Cultivator and Operations teams to manage the infrastructure and dedicated resources for the project – includes labour, greenhouse bays and climate control systems, drying rooms

Leverage Product R&D teams and analytical testing requirements throughout cultivar trials to support decision-making related to advancing genetics and how to manage cultivation and post-harvest processes

Make recommendations on future cultivar selection and practices for Sky's environment, including providing complete data package for Production teams to support full-scale commercialization

Support Production teams with research projects required to improve routine cultivation and post-harvest; prioritization based on overall needs of the business

Work with the Breeding & Genetics and Cultivar Development teams to set breeding targets that will enable long-term cultivation success at Sky

Engage other groups and individuals across Aurora to keep lines of communication open and ensure that all relevant stakeholders are aware of, and included in, projects.

Keep current with regulatory requirements and work with Aurora Regulatory Affairs team to ensure compliance of all projects within the portfolio (i.e. facility licensing, logistics for plant and cannabis products, import and export permitting, etc.).

Qualifications:

2+ years experience in commercial cultivation of cannabis is desired

Science background:

a PhD or MSc in biology, plant science, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field is highly desired

Experience designing and running research trials, including drafting protocols, data collection and analysis, report writing and presentation of results

Highly motivated and goal-oriented individual with a history of generating results

5+ years experience managing complex projects to effectively deliver on milestones and timelines, preferably in a research setting or regulated industry

Highly effective organization, prioritization and communication skills are essential

Ability to navigate corporate environments, understanding the needs and delivering for the business

Deep knowledge of cannabis chemistry and an appreciation for consumer preference attributes that drive commercial success

Knowledge of Priva and Trane climate control systems and ability to monitor and manage conditions as needed

Strong organization skills; ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines as required

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; values open communication on successes and challenges as they arise

A critical thinker who is able to anticipate challenges and opportunities

Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively across the organization

Experience in, and passion for, the cannabis industry

Strong desire to continuously learn in a dynamic and multi-disciplinary work environment

Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to pivot based on the needs of the business and team

A "get things done" attitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment is crucial.

We are seeking an individual with the right combination of experience and knowledge to join our team.

We would like to thank all applicants for their interest but only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Aurora is an equal opportunity employer. At Aurora, we are committed to do business inclusively and accommodate applicants with disabilities.
